IFP Rules Change effective July 1, 2012

Effective July 1, 2012 IFP Rules will change as noted below. These changes can be found at usapa.org under Official Rules. They will be included in the next printing of the rulebook.

Rule 2.E.5. Alterations: (deleted: Homemade or) Modified paddles are acceptable so long as they meet all specifications.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for tournament directors to determine if homemade paddles meet all of the paddle specifications so homemade paddles will no longer be allowed in sanctioned tournament play. Modified paddles such as added edge guards, changed grips, etc. will still be allowed if they meet all the specifications.

Rule 2.E.8 Model Designation. The manufacturer must have a clearly marked brand and model name and/or number on the paddle. Paddles with different core material, surface material, or other significant differences must have a unique name or number. Each unique model must have been offered for sale to the general public and samples of each unique model must have been submitted to USAPA and passed USAPA tests. Paddles used in USAPA sanctioned tournaments after January 1, 2014 must conform to this rule.

To make sure all paddles in sanctioned tournament play meet the Paddle Specifications the paddles will need to be identified with brand name and model name or number. All paddles used in sanctioned tournament play will need to be tested and pass the deflection test. There is no charge for this service. To give time for paddles to meet this requirement it will become effective starting January 1, 2014.

Rule 9.D. (last sentence only) If a player (deleted: is inside) has touched the non-volley zone for any reason, that player cannot volley the return until both feet (deleted: are on) have made contact with the playing surface completely outside the non-volley zone.

This is a wording change to the last sentence only of rule 9.D. It is being made to help eliminate confusion with the interpretation of the rule.

We just started this spring; a combination of beginners and returning snowbirds who played in Arizona, California, and Mexico. Special thanks to the Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, who let us take over their tennis courts. Last weekend we painted permanent pickleball court lines on the two existing courts. We hope to add two more courts using temporary nets over the next few weeks.

SOUTH DELTA LEADER - Pickleball picks up popularity in Ladner, Peter Darvill

Pickleball picks up popularity in Ladner
Peter Darvill took up the curiously-named sport of pickleball two years ago and has been hooked ever since.
The Ladner resident is now the Pickleball Canada ambassador for Richmond/South Delta and plays the game six days a week. He describes the sport as "a mini game of tennis played on a court the exact size of a badminton court."

The net is 34 inches high, slightly lower than a tennis court net, and players hit a hard Wiffle ball using paddles made out of wood or graphite. Most games are played in doubles. "It gets the heart rate going, especially when you're playing with people of your same calibre," Darvill says. "It's really good for seniors," he adds, explaining the sport is much easier on the knees than tennis. "Anybody who's got any experience in racquetball, table tennis, any of those kinds of sports, do very well at it," he says.

According to the USA Pickleball Association, the sport was invented in 1965 by a man from Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was named after the family dog, who would chase after balls and hide them in the bushes.

There are about 30 active pickleball players in South Delta who play at the Ladner Community Centre and the South Delta Recreation Centre. This year, local pickleballers have a new outdoor venue at Cromie Park, adjacent to Ladner Elementary School. The Corporation of Delta last year resurfaced the tennis courts and added permanent pickleball lines. "It's kind of unique in Canada and the northwest United States to be outside, because basically it's played inside here," says Darvill, explaining outdoor play requires a harder ball. "So the game gets played a little bit faster," he says, listing the added challenges of wind and sun glare. Darvill encourages others to try the sport and says he's happy to teach newcomers the basics. "It's quite easy to pick up," he says. "It's really growing in popularity and it's good for you."

Play time is usually Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. at Ladner Community Centre and Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at South Delta Rec Centre. Regular admission rates apply. Email pdarvill@hotmail.com for more information.

ARC Volunteer Appreciation Brunch April 18, 2012

Dino, Jenny, Mandy, Dave
Jenny, Shirley, Mandy
Since this is Volunteer Week, we would like to thank all those players who go out of their way to help new players learn the basics and develop their skills of pickleball at ARC. When an experienced player plays even one game with a new player, you have no idea how much the new player appreciates it and how valuable it is to the way they feel about our group. It really helps their game and brings them back. It also makes the experienced players feel good about themselves.

Dave, Shirley, Mike, Herb, Catherine and 45 other volunteers were invited to ARC Volunteer Appreciation Brunch April 18 and received Volunteer Appreciation awards from the City of Abbotsford. The speakers were Mayor Bruce Banman, Mark Taylor, General Manager Parks, Recreation & Culture, Jenny Thornton, Facility Manager, Mandy Hadfield, Recreation Manager, Ryan Coreau, Recreation Coordinator and Dino Tsembelis, Volunteer Coordinator.

The Mayor's hair is all shaved off for cancer research: The Abbotsford Times http://www.abbotsfordtimes.com/story.html?id=6468516 1 day ago – Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman and Heat goalie and cancer survivor ... see him sacrifice his locks and set a $30000 minimum for his head shave. ... funds raised will support cancer patients and research at Abbotsford's B.C. Cancer Agency. ... The mayor sang "The Man of LaMancha" beautifully with a strong perfect voice. The Happy Gang singers entertained with some traditional songs and then we had a slideshow featuring all the volunteering activities. There was plenty of delicious food: quiches, scones, muffins, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a large cake, coffee and tea. All of us had a wonderful time !!!

Surrey School District Spring Break DREAM Camps

We are very glad that 99% of students enjoyed our pickleball instructions during spring break DREAM Camps in Surrey:
Thank you for the participation of Pickleball Canada volunteer instructors, coaches and administration in Surrey School District Spring Break DREAM Camps. More than 500 at risk children with few opportunities and who often face multiple barriers on a daily basis, had the special opportunity to try a wide variety of new and interesting activities led by experts in their field including: art, dance, circus, science, robotics, gymnastics, cycling, martial arts, soccer, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, tennis and animal care. Without the more than 30 partner groups who lent their time, patience, energy and knowledge to the camps, we could not have offered this enriching and eye opening experience to children from across Surrey. We very much appreciated the time and dedication that your volunteers put forward, and the commitment you have demonstrated to our students. We hope that you too found the time rewarding and impactful – and very clearly made a difference in your work with the students over spring break.

Some statistics will give you a small idea of the important effect DREAM Camps have on vulnerable students in Surrey.

99% of students said they had fun at camp
53% of students said that if they were not at camp they would have been watching TV
58% of students said that if they were not at camp they would be playing video games
80% of students said they enjoyed making new friends

The goals of the spring break DREAMS Camps are:

1. To provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment for students who might otherwise engage in inappropriate activities over this two week break
2. Extend and enrich learning opportunities
3. Give children with few opportunities the chance to try a wide variety of interesting and exciting extra-curricular activities
4. Allow students to engage with and learn from a variety of adult mentors with different and diverse backgrounds and perspectives
5. Keep children connected to and engaged with school and to re-ignite passion for learning
6. To encourage participation in school and community extracurricular activities and events after the camps where possible

Thanks so much for everything you did to make DREAM Camps a reality and we hope to have you back again next year!

Pickleball Canada Volunteer Instructions in Schools

During Spring Break this week, Dave, Mike, Herb and I volunteered to be Pickleball instructors for three days for Pickleball Canada as requested by Surrey School Board for their 'Dream Camp' Program. We taught about 300 students in 10 elementary schools, morning and afternoon classes, ages from Grade 4 - 7.

The game the children enjoyed the most is the 'pickleball relay race': 10 boys in team 1 and 10 girls in team 2, each balances a pickleball on their paddle and ran to the end of the gym and back without the ball falling off. The team that finishes first won. They had a blast !!!

Most children cannot hit a ball at first, but after one and half hour, they can even rally. They learned how to serve and how to play a game. We would like to thank ARC and Maclure Elementary School for lending paddles for the students use. We used 2 USAPA portable nets and they were great. The teachers were very helpful and the students loved it.
